Lossless vs AI Fill: Why the Gemini Sparkle Can Be Removed Exactly

Last updated 2026-10-21

There are two ways to get rid of a watermark. You can fill it in, by guessing what was behind it, or you can undo it, by calculating what was behind it. Almost every watermark only allows the first. The Gemini sparkle allows the second, which is why our Gemini watermark remover can give you the original pixels back.

Method 1: AI fill (inpainting)

Tools like Photoshop’s Generative Fill, phone “magic eraser” features and most online watermark removers delete the logo’s area and invent new pixels from the surroundings, sometimes with an AI model. On a plain sky the result is convincing. On text, faces, hair or patterned fabric it often isn’t: details get blurred, smudged or replaced by something that wasn’t there.

Fill is the only option when a logo is opaque, because the pixels behind it are simply gone. That is how we handle Kling, Hailuo and other generators’ marks with Select area.

Method 2: reversing the blend

The Gemini sparkle is semi-transparent. Each of its pixels was made by mixing the original colour with white in a fixed proportion, called alpha:

watermarked = alpha × 255 + (1 − alpha) × original

Alpha is the same for every Gemini image of a given size, so it can be measured once. With alpha known, the equation can be turned around:

original = (watermarked − alpha × 255) ÷ (1 − alpha)

That is the whole trick. Nothing is guessed and no AI model is involved: each pixel under the sparkle is calculated back to its original value, and every pixel outside the sparkle stays exactly as it was.

How exact is it?

On original Gemini downloads, very close to perfect. In our own tests on a sample image with the real sparkle pattern, the average difference from the true original inside the sparkle dropped from 11.35 to 0.35 on a 0–255 scale, which is far below anything you can see. The small remainder comes from rounding, because image files store whole numbers.

When reversing doesn’t work

In those cases, the remover falls back to fill. The troubleshooting guide walks through each one.

What reversing doesn’t touch

Because only the sparkle’s pixels change, invisible watermarks like SynthID stay in place. Here’s why that matters.
